About the artist

Hana Matsuzaki (2002) is an interdisciplinary emerging artist based in amiskwaciwâskahikan/Edmonton, who works primarily in painting and printmaking. Born in Japan and raised in Canada, She uses the duality of both cultures as inspiration for her works. Hana has graduated from the University of Alberta’s BFA program in art and design, with work displayed most recently (April 2024) in a group exhibition “Ground Level” at FAB Gallery in Edmonton, Alberta.

She can be seen using landscapes she is familiar with to inspire surrealist dreamscapes that focus on healing through the embrace of nature and animals. Paying close attention between the lines to understand the similarities between our own personal and on a larger scale, environmental struggles.

87blooms can be seen as a manifestation of success, the Japanese numbers 8 (Hachi) and 7 (Nana) combined to create the name Hana, blooms through each season regardless of the hardships endured over the winter before.
